PACKAGING TECHNICAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Contact : Annie PERRIN

In order to control the quality of more and more complex products, laboratory research on materials and packaging systems, characterized by very various shapes, materials, functions and constraints is becoming of paramount importance.

The Packaging Technical Study team is able to bring about the best solutions to problems raised by the packing – product – technology system control and contribute to develop new products.

The great number of proposed services, from just a piece of advice to the applied research study is aimed at packing manufacturers and users.

Areas of activity

ÄCharacterization and optimization of packing properties

ÄSpecifications sheet development and checking

ÄTechnical assistance to packing production

ÄPreservation process studies and development

ÄResearch & Development studies about the packing/product couple

METHODS AND TOOLS

ÄStudies which comply with standardized methods

ÄTailored analysis’ method development

- Mechanical tests such as thickness, tensile strength, compression, tearing, bursting tests

- Gas (O2, CO2) and steam permeability

- Airtightness test

- Gas phase chromatography with headspace system, liquid phase chromatography, N.M.R.

- Aging equipment (climatic wall, sunlight simulator…)

- Packaging equipment (capping machine for small container, bagging machine – vacuum packaging and with modified atmosphere)

SPECIFICITIES

Provision of tailored services according to each plant technical specificities

Work in cooperation with food chemical and microbiology laboratory

Extension of packing technical studies by means of sensorial valuations and packing consumer’s acceptability studies.

ACHIEVEMENTS EXAMPLES

ÄPackaging airtightness defects : possible causes study

Action on industrial site and tests carried out in laboratory in order to analyze and list packing airtightness defects and problems solved.

ÄAcceptability threshold for packing opening strengths are characterized and validated by consumers.

Implementation of measuring instruments allowing to evaluate packaging functionality in fact, quantitatively from technical test and consumer study synergy.

ÄPacking new concept development

Packing concept definition (functional specification sheet) – Development assistance (packing designers and providers are consulted, technical specification sheet and prototypes are created – new packing launch (providers are selected, packaging technologies are chosen, preservation test, packagings are validated by consumers.
